Summary:

The ability to deliver effective oral briefings to senior officials is a critical skill in government.  Decision-makers are faced with multiple and complex issues involving a range of interests and stakeholders.  

The course consists of the following training modules:    

1: The Effective Oral Briefing 

The oral transmission of information, analysis and recommendations is one of the key public service competencies and sought-after skill.  This module will focus on the following:

  • Key strategic elements of effective oral briefings
  • Structuring and tailoring the oral briefing
  • Applying the right skills necessary for oral briefings
  • Tips and tricks for responding to questions with confidence
  • Increasing your insights into oral briefings  

2. Briefing Efficiency -- Getting to the Point 

Senior officials in government have limited time and attention for the many issues that demand their focus every day. Staff need to be able to develop and deliver clear, succinct, informative and persuasive briefings within very strict timeframes. 

This section will cover: 

  • The purpose and intended outcome of a briefing
  • The briefing format to clearly and succinctly describe what a briefing is about; Briefing needs and preferences
  • The best method to deliver an oral briefing 
  • How and when briefings are most likely to occur

This course is designed for public servants who wish to excel in delivering oral briefings to senior management as well as elected officials.

Instructor:

The instructor is a highly-experienced trainer who works extensively with Canada’s federal, provincial and municipal governments.  He taught in the public sector for over 20 years and coaches public sector organizations while serving in a leadership position in a Public Administration postgraduate program.
